WALL Project Field Visit to the Mukungwa River Debris Flow Site

Following the successful Workshop on Modelling Debris Flows and Flash Floods, representatives of the WALL Project, workshop speakers, and experts from the Rwanda Water Resources Board conducted a field visit on 9 July 2026 to the Mukungwa River in Vunga Sector, Nyabihu District, Rwanda. The visit focused on an area that has experienced severe debris flow events, causing extensive damage to the surrounding landscape. The field observations provided an opportunity to relate the modelling techniques presented during the workshop to real-world conditions, while discussing debris flow processes, hazard assessment, and potential mitigation strategies. The visit also strengthened collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and experts from the University of Bristol, the Rwanda Water Resources Board, and the WALL Project. By combining field observations with numerical modelling, participants explored approaches to improving the understanding and management of debris flow hazards in Rwanda. The WALL Project continues to promote collaborative research, knowledge exchange, and capacity building to support effective disaster risk reduction and resilience in vulnerable communities.
