Workshop Successfully Held: Modelling Debris Flows and Flash Floods

The WALL Project is pleased to highlight the successful completion of the Workshop on Modelling Debris Flows and Flash Floods, held on 7–8 July 2026 at the East African Institute for Fundamental Research (EAIFR), University of Rwanda. The two-day, interactive workshop brought together students, researchers, and professionals to strengthen capacity in debris flow and flash flood modelling. The training was led by Professor Andrew Hogg and Dr. Mark Woodhouse from the University of Bristol. Participants gained both theoretical knowledge and practical experience through lectures and hands-on sessions covering: The free-to-use LaharFlow web model Simulation of Earth-surface flows over topography Modelling erosion and deposition processes Theory and real-world applications of debris flow and flash flood modelling Creating and visualizing model outputs using QGIS The workshop was sponsored by the University of Bristol and organized by the East African Institute for Fundamental Research (EAIFR) at the University of Rwanda. The WALL Project values opportunities that build scientific capacity and foster international collaboration in natural hazard modelling and disaster risk reduction. We thank the trainers, organizers, and all participants for making this workshop a success. This event was funded by the University of Bristol.
