The conference opened on September 1st in Kigali, Rwanda, with welcoming remarks from the French Embassy in Rwanda, REMA, MINEMA, and UNESCO (IGCP).
The keynote lecture by Prof. Andrew Woods set the tone for the day with a presentation on Multiphase Volcanic Flows.
Morning scientific contributions included:
• Prof. Alison Rust on the origins of magma bubble and crystal textures and their use in interpreting past eruptions.
• Dr. Antonio Costa on the rheology of crystal-rich magmas.
In the afternoon:
• Prof. Andrew Hogg presented on modelling interactions between lava flows and topography.
• Prof. Catherine Meriaux shared advances in numerical modeling of lava domes.
The scientific program was followed by a poster session, providing a platform for participants to showcase their research and foster interactive discussions. The day concluded with a group photo, marking the success of an inspiring first day.
